W.4_Lilly Wasitova_ Where To Go for Study?

Problem Statement

The most common problem parents facing when the school year is coming to its end, especially for High School Graduation, is to make the decision on where to send their children afterwards. As my daughter was in the 12th grade, we made an assessment for places to go for study, considering her interest of doing Life Science/Preventive Medicine.

An assessment using the techniques in [1] is to be performed.

Alternative Solutions

Since she has a family history of studying abroad, this gives her additional alternatives as:

  1. Study in Indonesia. Considering the major she was looking for, two cities came into consideration, for both state and private universities
    1. In Jakarta
    2. In Bandung
  2. Study in Overseas. Considering the family living places, two options are to be considered
    1. In US
    2. In Europe

Selection Criteria

In order to have a better comparison among the alternatives, the factors that are essential are listed as below:

  1. The Major study availability
  2. Entrance Fee
  3. Tuition Fee
  4. Entry Test/Preparation
  5. Visa
  6. Cost of Living
  7. Study Duration
  8. Living Adjustment

Compiling the alternatives with the attributes for the University Selection gave us the following table:

Table 3: Dominance Model for Selection

Performance Monitoring & Post Evaluation of Results

Eliminating the alternatives based on Cost and Major Attributes gave us two selections to consider, namely the Jakarta State University and Germany University. If only using the Dominance Model and taking all attributes into consideration, the outlook will be as below:

University Selection

DOMINANCE

Yes

No

The final conclusion will be very much dependent on the attribute ‘Entrance fee’, as we know that this variable is very much flexible, especially during the past few years.

In conclusion to the University Selection is that:

  1. Among all alternatives, the best selection is down to two Universities, in Jakarta State University and Germany University.
  2. The attribute ‘Entrance Fee’ is the most likely to not choose the University in Jakarta and go for the next selection, especially by quantifying this attribute will most likely change the attribute ‘Tuition Fee and Accumulative Living Cost’ from better to worse.
  3. The other attributes of Visa, Study Duration and Living Adjustment are part of the process of becoming mature in live and not only pursuing the grade.

    AWESOME, Bu Lilly!!!!

You have the fundamentals mastered!!! From this point forward, I am going to offer you an option. IF you mentor someone (say Pak Erwin or Pak Teguh or Pak Tea) who is struggling, I will give you BOTH credit for that week.

Understood? It means if you help say Pak Erwin identify a problem and set it up correctly, you BOTH get credit. Him for doing the work and you for mentoring him.

Now, part of that bargain is that the person you are mentoring actually does the work and that your role is as mentor/facilitator, but as you clearly understand what I am looking for, time to move you on to another level of leadership….

Again, awesome job and I look forward to seeing what you and Erwin, Teguh or Tea can come up with in the coming weeks.

Same offer stands for Candra and Adi as well……. Mentor one of your team members and BOTH of you get credit…..

    BR,
    Dr. PDG, Jakarta
